Biography

Alex Turner received his first guitar as a Christmas present in 2001 and, along with schoolmates Andy Nicholson (bass), Jamie Cook (guitar) and Matt Helders (drums), formed Arctic Monkeys. Helders has later claimed he only chose drums because all other positions in the band were taken (his playing has since been compared by the NME to that of "a 12-armed psychopath").

Their roots in the High Green district of Sheffield have a profound effect on both lyrical content and delivery, with Turner's heavy Northern English accent prevalent in such songs as Mardy Bum and When The Sun Goes Down.

The music itself varies between crunching guitars, gentle melodies, jumpy singalongs and thumping rockers, all delivered with wit and verve. Awards that have showered the band include the 2006 Mercury Music Prize for debut Whatever You Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and numerous Brit Awards.
