It was obvious that Ash couldn't continue the way they had begun. Formed over good times as teenagers in Northern Ireland, Tim Wheeler, Mark Hamilton and Rick McMurray had continued to party like they worked a normal 9 to 5 through the releases of a mini-album, Trailer, and their proper debut, 1977. They were close to breakdown--they had to rethink. The answer came in the shape of a fourth member, Charlotte Hatherley, who took some of the strain and vulnerability that is inevitable... Got this on Amazon for 98p so can't complain too much, but for me 1977 & Free All Angels were easily their best albums. This a... Read full review »
Nu-Clear Sounds is hugely under-rated. In my opinion it far surpasses the quality of 1977 and on an equal par with Free All Angels, but in a very different style. Overall it has an obviously dark theme, reflecting Tim Wheeler's mood at the period when he had writer's block and things were't all well with Ash.
The album starts powerfully with 'Projects,' which immediately shows that Wheeler's song writing is brilliant, even at it's worst. 'Low Eb... Read full review »
I am a huge fan of Ash, after owning their singles collection. But this seems very average when you hear their singles collection. This isn't a bad album, by any means, but I know that Ash are an extremely talented band who pretty much are rock music over in Ireland. If I had not heard the colossal talent of their singles, I would have given it another star, but since I have heard them at their best I can tell you that is, quite frankly, not it. There are however some tracks that made me pleased I did invest in it, those being 'Death Trip 21', w... Read full review »
It got some pretty bad press at the time of release due to charlotte joining and a definate change in sound, but i still think Nu-Clear is a very good album. 'Jesus Says' is the most immediately prominent track on the album. It's actually a very good song. I'm Gonna Fall is a very melodic song, but i think it's pretty, it was one of the first songs i learned on guitar. Infact, i later went on to form a band with 3 other ash fans, initially playing songs from this album and 1977. Which brings me onto numbskull, a delight... Read full review »
Until recently, I only owned 1977, Free All Angels and Intergalactic Sonic 7s but one sunny day I decided to finally shell out from my meagre student budget and get Nu-Clear Sounds. What a surprise I got! It's got everything! From dirty guitar riffs galore in the first half to the poignant gentleness that sets in later on, this is, in fact the ultimate album to recover from being dumped to,... Read full review »
The only way i found out about this band is from the burn baby burn video played on mtv2. i thought it was pretty catchy. i went to the store to pick it up, but only found nuclear sounds. i went on a whim and bought it. little did i know on how much as was going to like it.
"burn out" is the best song in my opinion. everytime i listen to it i feel like i'm in another zone... Read full review »
In my opinion, Nu-Clear Sounds is way better than Free All Angels and Trailer, and it's as good as 1977. Tim Wheeler's songs on Nu-Clear are generally similar to those on 1977, but there are less really hard rocking tracks on Nu-Clear, which I think gives it a plus. However, Nu-clear gets a minus in the classic song category. A few tracks on 1977, namely Angel Interceptor and Kung Fu, are spectacular songs. The songs on Nu-Clear Sounds are all... This album is great in my book. Then again, all Ash albums are. But that's beside the point. This album got horrible reviews just because it wasn't a "1977" carbon copy. It's not fair, this album has some incredible songs on it. Jesus s... Read full review »
