The disco-punk bandwagon might have long since left town, but Tonight:Franz Ferdinand suggests Glasgow's arch dukes of art-pop aren't going to let a little thing like a shifting zeitgeist put them off their principle aim of writing music to make girls dance. Whereas its predecessor, 2005's You Could Have It So Much Better, felt a little rushed in the execution, Franz's third album feels stronger for its two years of gestation. Employing a slightly more rigid, synthetic feel than its predecessors, these twelve tracks mix up sing-along pop moments and loping grooves with sundry left turns, meeting expectations, then confounding them with a showy flourish. 'Ulysses...  Read full review »

After they slightly went off the rails with 2005's 'You Could Have It So Much Better', Franz Ferdinand come up with the natural follow up to their self titled debut back in 2004.

It took me a while to get in to this album - not as instant as the first one, but it certainly does grow on you. It's still good old fashion poppy songs from the guys, but this time they've added a hint of dance music to it. Now, I hate dance music,...  Read full review »

This album echoes the best of Franz Ferdinand's previous melodic hooks and songwiting talent, Bowie and Clash Punk Rock new wave retro with a dark underworld vibe, expertly welded together by Dan Carey's superb signature production.

Unexpected and Utterly Brilliant

After the somewhat disappointing You Could Have Had It So Much Better, Franz Ferdinand took the more electropop route with Tonight, to outraged complaints from diehard fans and to my own personal disquiet - I've never been a great fan of the style. After a few listens, however, I was not only won over, but it has become one of my favourite albums.

Although Ulysses is the popular song (and is undoubtedly a great song), my personal favourites are Can't Stop Feeling and Lucid Dreams, the former being a head-bopping, exciting romp that would make a great single; the latter equally brilliant but infused with a three or f...  Read full review »

They've still got 'it'!!

Don't be put off by some of the reviews - this is still a predominately guitar/bass/drums based album!! With a smattering of keyboards on some tracks that in my view only enhance the songs and add an extra dimension. This 3rd album still captures FF's distinctive, seductive style - most of the album still has the 'big' sound, infectious beat and 'anthemic' quality of other FF classics - the first 9 tracks especially, particularly 'No You Girls', 'Bite Hard' and 'What She Came For'. 'Send Him Away' is beautifully melodic. The last 3 tracks are slower but are a nice contrast to the others and enable the listener to 'wind down'. Unlike the first alb...  Read full review »
