Over three years in the making, 21st Century Breakdown is the answer to the question Green Day are stuck with--exactly how do you follow up a twelve million selling rock opera? With more of the same, of course, just like the Who used to do. To be honest, the narrative line is largely incoherent, following the story of starstruck young lovers Christian and Gloria (as in G-L-O-R-I-A) as they confront The Man in a predictably dystopian world. But though plenty of bands have recently resuscitated this long discredited form--The Mars Volta and the excellent, not dissimilar Thermals, to name but two--none can pack in so many decent tunes as Billie Jo Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt. I am disappointed with this album. Every Green Day album up to know has been different, but 21ST CENTURY sounds very much like a copy of American Idiot ie.the production, riffs, style etc. It just sounds like that have run out of ideas. That said, every band has their pe... Read full review »

'21st Century Breakdown' is a mixed affair as it contains some of Green Day's best work but includes songs worthy of omission. It feels as if the band have tried to encompass different genres/styles such as Queen, The Clash and Springsteen all under one roof. Whilst it is a bold move for a band to evolve and experiment with their sound (as demonstrated by 'American Idiot'), the final result doesn't fully pay off. The first 'Act' kicks off proceedings rather well as songs like 'Viva La Gloria' and 'Before the Lobotomy' remind us of a band who are still capable of writing quick-fire punk numbers, bursting with that youthful Dookie-era energy. However, its the second 'Act' wthe album takes a different direction or should that be directionless?! For example, the Dylan-esque 'Peacemaker' does... Read full review »
