Almost unreal - Albini gets the Manics thinking less old fogey, more old Fugazi
Quote

Alright, alright - a slight exaggeration I admit. This is no `Repeater' but `Plague Lovers' does mark a return to a near `Holy Bible' punk style and an authenticity that I think most had believed to be long gone in regards to this band. The twin influences of Richey's long lost lyrics and Albini's wise old production head have helped in coaxing out the best music from the Manics since 1994.

The rocking material is punchy and to the point - these tracks all clock in under three and a half minutes - and the punk delivery still suits Bradfield's vocals. Some will say he is too good a singer for this style, or that he is now too old to truly mean it man, but he has me convinced. A great performance. Some of the riffs are a little too familiar perhaps - but at least they are cribbing some pretty nifty moves (often form their younger selves). `Marlon J.D', `Pretension/Revulsion' and `...Bleach' take pointers from both `The Holy Bible' and even more interestingly, the band's debut `Genera...  Read full review »

Triumphant Return of the Epic Wordsmith
Quote

One thing is certain - Richey's lyrics give the Manics a depth, an existential spark and an awkward rebellious beauty, which they lack without him. Of course Nicky has written classics like "Design" and "Tolerate" but it is Richey who truly gives them their edge. Musically this is top drawer - with particularly impressive guitar playing, creating the right mood to suit each song. I've only played this once but already it is up there with their very best - the...  Read full review »

Manic Depression

Tribute ? Exorcism ? Panacea ?

Guitarist Mr Edwards' disappearance in 1995 remains a
tragically unresolved mystery for those he left behind.

A thousand questions unanswered - A very horrible thing.

His notebooks would appear to have been the starting point
and inspiration for the creation of these thirteen songs.

The Words then are the main point of it all
and we should start our appraisal here.

The Words : Poems, Lyrics, Reflections (?)
are truly awful. Mind-jarringly so.
Untidy, barely coherent expressionistic pap.
Take a quick look at 'Facing Page : Top Left'
for a bracing example. Doggerel !

I have held some small admiration for frontman
Mr Bradfield's musical skills since my first
encounter with 1994's 'The Holy Bible'.
It was a very fine album.
His lean, muscular guitar playing and powerfully
expressive tenor voice generated real energy.

Sad then to report that this once-fine band's new album
'Journal For P...  Read full review »
