Biography

For just three seemingly-human males, this lot make an awful lot of noise. Equal parts dramatic, beautiful and raucous, Muse are one of Britain's biggest bands.

The group started life in the quiet England seaside town of Teignmouth (pronounced "Tin-muth") in Devon, where they toyed with the name Rocket Baby Dolls before settling on Muse. The group then, as now, consisted of Dominic Howard (drums), Chris Wolstenholme (bass, backing vocals) and Matt Bellamy (vocals, guitar and keys) although Wolstenholme only became a bassist begrudgingly, originally being a drummer. Multi-instrumentalist Bellamy has musical talent in his genes; his father George was a guitarist in the sixties group The Tornados, whose biggest hit was Telstar in 1962.

As for his offspring's music, Muse were dismissed early on in their career as Radiohead wannabes. Fans however saw the potential in early songs such as Muscle Museum (taken from debut album Showbiz) and their faith was repaid when the thumping single New Born ushered in a more experimental direction in sophomore LP Origin Of Symmetry. The band's sound has continually evolved since and their willingness to push the boundaries of bombastic, almost prog, rock has reaped rewards including Mercury nomination for Black Holes and Revelations and a headline show at Wembley stadium.
