It's often the way of rock & roll--the accidental stuff you don't sweat over often turns out to be better than the supposedly generation-defining monolith you rupture your life to expel. So it was with Oasis and their third album, Be Here Now--soaked with sweat, it left Noel and Liam purple-faced with effort and stank like old egg sandwiches in a sock. Meanwhile The Masterplan--b-sides and live tracks--came out a year later and effortlessly reminded everyone why they'd liked the hairy brothers in the first place. "Acquiesce"--don't worry, they admit... Read full review »
Ironically, this is the band's best album. Had this been released as the 4th studio album, as opposed to all of these songs being B-Sides, it would probably be more talked about than "Definitely Maybe" and "(What's The Story) Morning Glory?". Even the weaker songs, The Swamp Song, Headshrinker and I Am The Walrus, would've made their way into any other Oasis album. Acquiesce and The Ma... Read full review »

On one level, the Masterplan makes me sad - it is a signal to
what Oasis could have been. All the jibes about lacking progression
and never doing anything different can be put to bed by the songs
on this record; what you find here is Noel Gallagher's superb
songwriting at its best. If all the songs here (and the B-sides
that didn't make the grade or followed) had been included on
albums, Oasis could have topped up all their more recent releases
to the quality of their earliest ones.
On all other levels, it makes me delighted - the songs, from
rip-roaring should-have-been-a-single Acquiesce, to the epic
should-have-been-a-double-A-side-with-Wonderwall-because-it's-just-as-good
The Masterplan, the album is a joy to listen to.
The selection of the tracks was always going to be a bit
controvertial - it started as a vote on the Oasis web site, but in
the end Noel over-ruled a couple of times (and who can blame him
when y...
