The Killers might hail from one of the USA's most quintessentially American cities (Las Vegas), but their debut album Hot Fuss displays an Anglophilic streak that is an ocean wide. Steeped in the back-catalogue of the Smiths and Pulp, with broad 80s synth sweeps cloaking each tale of fraught metrosexual romance, this band clearly rate the swoon over the swagger. Still, this is almost entirely an upbeat record, one made for the packed club than the smoky VIP room; in particular "On Top", "Somebody Told Me" and "Mr Brightside" are tremendous examples of brea...  Read full review »

****FANTASTIC ALBUM****

This is one of the best albums of this type i have heard recently. There are some fantastic songs with great bass and some great songs with awesome drum bashing! You will probably recognise 'Smile like you mean it', 'All these things that i've done' and 'Somebody told me'. They are all recent big hits. You will also see that there are some that you don't recognise. 'Andy, you're a star', 'On top' and 'Glamerous Indie rock...  Read full review »

One of the best records I've ever purchased

I have to say this is one of the best , if not THE best, records I have ever bought. I've read reviews that have slated this album saying the first half of the album is excellent and the rest is just filling...  Read full review »

My first heartfelt obsession!
Quote

Well! I'm 17 years old and I admit within this review that I have never had an obsession I will admit to. I am a girl who grew up with the Spice Girls and let myself be swept up in mainstream hype. But I am proud to announce The Killers are my first independent musical obsession and I'm proud of that fact, and I hope this review will tell you why!

I actually got Hot Fuss cheap in the summer of 2005 because I remembered how well they were received and wondered what I was missing out on. Somebody Told Me had featured on a summer compilation CD I had, and I think everyone has to admit how infectious that track was, love it or hate it! I didn't mind it, although I have only just come to hear/understand the lyrics this whole year later and I am ashamed - The Killers deserve my undivided attention!

At the time however, I didn't think I would particularly warm to a dozen tracks in the same vein as STM... so it's just as well they're not! :D

1) Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine: Ask anyone, they'll tell you how incredible this song is. Guilty of a murder, commited through jealousy, a love lost, a love he regrets - you can feel so emotions in Brandon's every word, and I actually sat up with a friend recently who loves The Killers as much as I do, for a good hour deliberating who Jenny could have been and discussing the genius of this song. It truly is incredible - such a fantastic opener!

2) Mr. Brightside: It was upon hearing this track that I decided I had to get Hot Fuss because it was so unlike STM. Brandon plays the jealous lover with his every word and it breaks your heart, the best single in my opinion. # It was only a kiss, how did it end up like this? It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss! # This song can touch anyone who listens to it IMO. And a 5* to the video as well - I love the Moulin Rouge style, massive fan of that film and all passion and jealousy entailed - and is that Brandon I see dancing there? Oh what a beautiful beautiful man!

3) Smile Like You Mean It: There is a lot of pain in this song I think, telling stories of uncertainity that again, I think everyone can relate to. But the power of The Killers song for me is that I can think about them and I can smile cos of how Brandon's voice carries through his every message. I smile like I mean it! :P

4) Somebody Told Me: OK, I admit, I have no idea what this song is about, but I put it down to Brandon Flowers' hidden genius, and let's face it, no-one can escape the beat of this song - and I bet you all sing along! # Well somenody told me that you had a boyfriend that looked like a girlfriend I had in February of last year! #

5) All These Things That I Have Done: Again, not one I understood to begin with and one I thought dragged on, but now I just love it because I can listen and take it to heart and the beat lifts me up and makes me smile, and I don't think anyone can say they weren't encouraged to sing # I've got soul, but I'm not a soldier! # like they didn't mean it because these guys can make me believe it and...  Read full review »

Best album of the year

Ignore the sceptical reviews - this is a fantastic album. It's the only album of last year that I've played over and over again.1 The first 7 tracks on the album are all great songs in their own way - with a great mixture of indie rock/guitar/m...  Read full review »

I wasn't too impressed with the Killers to start with, but having seen them at Reading Festival and finding myself humming with their tracks whenever they were played on the radio, I finally had to buy the album. Somebody told me, this album was great!!!
Quote

Now, i will refuse to read a bad review on this album because it is false!!! This album is great, i play it all the time.
Usually i am the type of person to skip tracks on an album, but never have i on this one!! It is simply because, all the tracks are simply FAB!!!
I orginally was going to go through all the tracks individually but, it looked like all the tracks were gunna be ***** stars!
So, all i can say is - it is my favourite album of the moment and i cannot belive it has been out such a long time!!!
I first heard the whole album on my brother's ipod and then i simply had to buy it!!! I bought it online and with the extra DVD it is definatly worth spending the extra couple of pounds on the five track disc.
Back to the album -- best tracks i would have to say would be -- 'On top', 'Jenny was a friend of mine' and 'Believe me Natalie'and 'All these things i've done'!!!
But now know...  Read full review »

Back To The Future?
Quote

For most, the days of Electro-pop were at their peak in the eighties and an even larger number think it should stay there. The killers however have blown this theory right out of the water with an excellent debut album that even the godfathers of the genre, Kraftwerk, would be proud of.
Reintroducing this form of music to the iPod generation was about as easy a job as Pete Doherty’s drug councillor and as such it remained untouched for almost 15 years.
Thus, this fourpiece from Las Vegas stepped up and have seemed to recapture the essence of the 80’s sound yet still manage to make it seem fresh and new which is an achievement not to be sniffed at.
One of the qualms that I do have with this album is that although it has managed to recapture a music culture from the 80’s it has also brought the epic dramatisation and big hair with it.
Alright, well maybe I can let the big hair go, it does only belong to one member of the band.
The whole point of making something epic though, be it a film, be it a song, be it a theatre production, be it a last minute goal in the cup final, is to make it dramatic, is to make people remember it, but more importantly it is to emphasise how massive and grandiose something it.
So how can something be massive, grandiose or dramatic when it’s constantly being done?...  Read full review »

Brilliant Debut
Quote

Heavily influenced by 80's British music, Hot Fuss is a storming debut album by The Killers. Some people say it's an album of two halves but I'm not one of them. Yes the first half of the album is incredibly strong as it contains the four singles and the superb opener Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, but the second half is not exactly poor in comparison. On Top and Midnight Show could well have bee...  Read full review »

I bought this album because I really like the track 'Mr Brightside' which is excellent and easily the best thing on the album. Some of the others are ok but I couldn't listen to this from start to finish as it would annoy me intensely. The reason I'm not that fond of it is because I often struggle to see a lot...  Read full review »

Very derivative of 80's pop (duran duran, cure, smiths, etc). Little originality but sometimes that's not a bad thing. Lack the musicality and serious musicianship of, say, a Muse. In ten years time no one...  Read full review »
